American engine swap for Mercedes 126 series cars ……….‘Work In Process’

We here at MindFlip Developments are in the process of making an  engine swap kit for the Mercedes Benz 126 series of vehicles.d

“Why on earth would anyone commit such sacrilege! “

It’s simple.

People are taking there beloved old faithful Mercedes Benz in to the service garage and being told by the service manager that the engine and tranny is shot and now your looking at over 10 grand + to replace them.

So the Merc now pretty old but still looking great is now finding its way to the wrecking yard………… that’s sacrilege!

Swapping in a plentiful low mileage modern EFI engine and overdrive transmission from your local wrecking yard doesn’t seem such a bad idea to give the old girl a new lease on life.

It seemed like a V8 was the obvious choice but on further research there is a new kid on the block

GM’s Vortex 4200 inline six.  And with a hundred horsepower more than the stock V8 it seems perfect.

Our goals in producing this kit are:

  • Find a Plentiful engine that fits in the engine bay with the least hassle
  • Find a Plentiful engine/transmission that’s reliable and about 100 Hp more than the original
  • Better gas mileage than original.
  • Use as many standard ‘off-the-shelf’ components as we can
  • A ‘bolt in’ kit
  • After kit installed no outside visible difference
  • With the cost of the kit and donor engine/trans EFI components etc. we would like to keep the conversion under $2500
  • Ready for sale in March / April 2008

The type of customer who would buy our product would not likely be a ‘hot rodder’ but a fairly handy week end car mechanic who wants to hang on to this classy classic style car. Or a mechanically inclined person who cant really justify paying out money for a Mercedes Benz but will beat the system by picking up a car very cheap and ending up with one classy ride.

More about GM’s Vortex 4200 straight six at 275 HP !

It’s all alloy with overhead twin cams and shouldn’t be too hard to find at the wreckers. On 28 February 2007  the Flint Michigan plant  had produced  2 million engines

The inline six is inherently smooth and well-balanced and that’s the name of the game for a Mercedes Benz

General Motors' Vortec 4200 inline six-cylinder engine has been recognized as a “Ward's Communications 10 Best Engine."

When it was introduced in 2002 model year vehicles, the Vortec 4200 was the first inline six-cylinder engine for GM in almost 20 years. Initially the first engines in 2002 had cylinder liner problems so stay away from 2002’s

Since its introduction, the Vortec 4200 has been a proven sales success in GM's midsize sport utility vehicles.

Buick Rainier,
Chevrolet TrailBlazer,
GMC Envoy,
Oldsmobile Bravada,
